FROM DUST TIL’ DAWN — 20 YEARS LATER

David Margules has always been a witness to chaos. Born to a family of artists, Mr. Margules rejected his family’s legacy by pursuing a career in stock trading in New York City. A misguided decision, by his own estimation, that he paid dearly for. For seventeen years, David became an expert in his field, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jordan Belfort and deftly navigating the turbulent world of the New York Stock Exchange. Yet, as time marched forward, a profound lack of meaning in his profession pushed him toward a different path - the world of high art and photography.

Then the unthinkable happened. On September 11th, 2001, two planes collided into the World. Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, killing 2,753 people and forever altering the American psyche. At this moment, David discovered his calling. Through sheer determination, he became one of the few volunteer photographers granted access to document the 9/11 cleanup and recovery operation at Ground Zero. Further, unlike his counterparts, he remained on site for a total of nine months, capturing over 10,000 photographs and forging close ties with local first responder agencies.

His photography - a raw, intimate testament to the triumphs and tragedies of everyday people aired on ABC News, Nippon TV, and the CBC. Today, his work can be found in the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the New York Historical Society, and the Imperial War Museum in London. David continues to volunteer his talents in disaster zones, including the LA Wildfires, earning him a Pulitzer Prize nomination for Feature Photography.Like many of those who served at Ground Zero, Mr. Margules developed a chronic illness caused by toxic debris from the pit. As a survivor of Leukemia, David is passionate in his mission to aid 9/11 first responders, and has spent the past two decades championing their cause through the advocacy group, September’s Mission. His latest book, From Dust till Dawn:20 Years After, is a deeply personal tribute to those still suffering from the aftermath of

20 Years After

Photographer David Margules is credited for his historic capturing of the aftermath of September 11, 2001 and beyond by taking over 10,000 photographs. These images capture every step of the recovery work in “the pit” that remained. Mr. Margules was one of the only civilians with access to ‘the pit’ throughout the months-long recovery operation at the World Trade Center site. This book is a tribute to the work of many First Responders, Rescue and Recovery works. Many of whom he developed close ties to over his time as a volunteer photographer, and still maintains.
